The CrossFit style of training has changed thousands of lives worldwide. One such life is that of Kabelo Moche, a 19-year-old rugby player from Mafikeng, South Africa.
Before he started training in the LiveIt gym, all Kabelo knew of CrossFit was what he had seen on television. He spent his first year of CrossFit as a spectator of the sport because of a dirt bike accident that nearly cost him his life. He suffered severe burns on his leg, two leg fractures, and a pulmonary embolism. A year later, Kableo has fought his way back into participation as a member of the Vikings Rugby Academy, and competitive rugby by way of intense circuit training in the LiveIt gym.
“This year I am able to go full out without anything holding me back,” he said. “It has been challenging because I could not chicken out and I needed to prove that I could do it to myself and to others.”
With a healthy diet and three months of doing CrossFit workouts nine times each week, Kabelo has lost an astonishing 25 kgs. (55 lbs). The weight loss and muscle gain have markedly improved his performance on the rugby field.
“I am more explosive on the rugby field, and because of CrossFit I have muscle memory which helps because the same moves we do in training, we do during a game. I see a big difference in my ability to move my body quicker,” he said.
Kabelo has met personal physical goals he previously thought impossible. He went from only being able to do 2 pull ups, to being able to knock out 20 consecutively. He also boasts a six-pack.
The mental aspects of doing CrossFit have also had an impact on this young athlete. He recognizes the mental fortitude needed to complete the workouts, as well as the development of self-awareness in the gym.
“I have always been competitive, but you have to be made out of something else to compete in CrossFit,” Kabelo admitted.
Because of his extensive injuries to his leg and foot, Kabelo’s future in rugby is still uncertain, but he does know one thing for certain; he has become a life-long enthusiast of CrossFit. The difference in the self confidence and determination in Kabelo is evident to all who know him, but more imporantly, to himself.
